General Guidelines
- Handlers, regardless of physical abilities and dogs, regardless of structure, may compete in CHU. There will be unlimited communication, praise and encouragement without penalty. All teams will be judged on their overall execution and completion of each station as posted. Team numbers must be worn on left upper arm. Use of any prohibited collar is subject for disqualification.
- Collars: Prohibited: Slip chain, slip nylon or any resemblance of. Prong (pinch) or any resemblance of. Head collars, gentle leaders or any special training collars. Martingale collars are subject to approval by the Ring Judge, Judge’s decision is final. Tags may remain on the collar as long as they do not present a distraction or inhibit the Team’s performance. Harnesses or Body Harnesses are permitted.
- Leads: Leads/leashes may be made of leather, fabric or nylon. All leads must be no less than (6) six feet in length and no longer than (8) eight feet in length. Prohibited: chain, retractable, or leads shorter than (6) six feet or longer than (8) eight feet in length.
Canine Guidelines
- dogs, regardless of breed, gender, disabilities, must have a permanent registration number with Canines & Humans United.
- All dogs, regardless of breed, gender, disabilities, must be no less than (6) six months on the day of the event/trial.
- All dogs, regardless of breed, gender, disabilities, must be no less than (1) one year on the day of the event/trial to participate in any class involving a jump.
- All dogs, regardless of breed, gender, disabilities, must be clean, groomed and wearing appropriate gear. Female dogs in season may not compete at any venue or in any category. Intact males must be controlled at all times.
- Dogs with disabilities: deaf, amputations, or other disability, may compete providing they are not in pain, contagious or appear to be forced or uncomfortable. An Exercise Modification form must be completed and is subject to approval by the Ring Judge. Judge’s decision is final.
- Dogs
with physical challenges may complete a Jump Height Modification form if
needed.
Permanent Jump Height Modification forms may be requested and noted on the dog’s registration forms. Subject to approval by Board of Directors. Must be submitted minimum of (14) fourteen days prior to event. - Dogs that appear to be ill, are with sutures, bandages or other material indicative of medical treatment or surgeries, or injuries may not participate at all while under such care.
- Inoculations
must be current for Rabies, Distemper, Canine Parvo Virus, and Bordetella.
Proof of Titer is acceptable. Must show proof upon request, and failure to
do so will result in disciplinary action.
Females in season or lactating may not participate in a CHU Trial. A Judge that with reason believes that a dog is pregnant or lactating must excuse the dog and note as such in the Judge’s book and is final. A bitch is considered pregnant until the following: - She whelps a litter.
- She is determined not pregnant by a licensed Veterinarian
- The 64th day after the last day the bitch was bred, counting the day of the breeding.
- Teams may complete their CHU registration on the day of the event prior to competing upon approval from a CHU Representative.
- All dogs must be handled by the owner or immediate family member.
- For Exhibition only, dogs may be handled by a non-family member. They must still have a CHU Registration and proof of inoculations. Their score will not be recorded nor may they earn placements.
- Dogs may be shown under their instructor/s.
- Dogs must be in portable kennels, or next to handler’s side and not allowed to wander in the designated holding area, when not in the ring performing/competing.
- All dogs must be leashed at all times when not in the ring or in their respective kennel/carriers.

Aggression by any dog is cause for immediate dismissal without refund of
any kind. Aggression is deemed as the following:
1. ) Unprovoked lunging at any dog
2. ) Biting
3. ) Snapping or Snarling
4. ) Attacking human or canine - Acts of aggression of any of the above kinds are grounds for disqualification, possible suspension, possible expulsion and the Team must leave the trial immediately without refunds of any kind.
- Reactive dogs may have an escort to and from the trial ring. An escort form must be completed. These dogs must be in a kennel when not showing in the trial ring. All rules for aggression by any dog apply. Escort forms may be filed on day of trial.
- Refunds are subject to the host clubs discretion and is their sole responsibility.
Handler Guidelines
- Handlers must handle their own dogs; an immediate family member is the only exception.
- Handlers are responsible to know and abide by all rules, regulations and guidelines set forth by CHU.
- Clothing must be neat, clean and appropriate wear for the competition ring. No tattered, torn, sleeveless, low cut or otherwise deemed inappropriate wear by the Judge is permitted.
- Shoes must be worn in the ring, closed toed or strap sandals are acceptable, no flip flops allowed.
- Handlers must accept the Judge’s decision as final. Snatching of ribbons, confrontational comments, loud comments or other poor behavior is prohibited and grounds for disciplinary action up to and including expulsion either temporary or permanent.
- Must be well behaved, cordial and free of gossip, rumor mongering, or other poor behavior to fellow competitors and/or Judges.
- Must keep their areas clean, leave area as it was prior to their use and cause no deliberate damage.
- Handlers are responsible for keeping their dog/s under control at all times.
- Harsh or abusive corrections, treatment or demeanor is prohibited and subject for removal from grounds.
- Double handling is strictly prohibited and is defined as the following:
1) Persons outside of the ring with intentional actions designed to affect the performance of the dog in the ring.
2) Persons outside of the ring attempting to improve or impair the performance of any dog. - Bait may be used as a reward inside of the ring in Rally Obedience only and must be kept in pocket until allowed. (At stationary stations only and prior to moving on to next stationary station).
- May not interfere with Ring Judge while he/she is judging a class.
- Must clean up after their dog/s eliminate.
- Refunds are subject to the host clubs discretion and is their sole responsibility.
Junior Handler Guidelines
- Any Handler under the age of 17 years old is considered a Junior Handler Team.
- May compete in all the same classes/categories as adult competitors.
- A Junior Handler may relinquish their status and compete as an adult at any time, once doing so, they may not return to Junior Status.
- Awards will be separate as in division and title, thus allowing competitor to continue to show as an adult when age is reached.
- All titles earned will have “J” added to end.
- Must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or responsible adult.
- Must be able to control the dog they are showing.
- Must follow all the same guidelines as adult competitors.
- Must show a dog that is currently working toward or has already earned a title in Rally Obedience or Traditional Obedience.
- No child under the age of 6 may compete.
